About
My name is Manoah van der Velde
I'm a recent engineering graduate from Andrews University, and I developed the kick plate refinishing machine in the above image as part of my senior design project to solve a real-world problem at Saint John’s Resort.
At Saint John’s, aesthetics are a high priority—but kick plates, especially polished ones in high-traffic areas, quickly become scratched and dented, falling short of the property's overall standards. The machine I designed restores those plates by applying a consistent, durable brushed finish—often transforming plates that would otherwise be replaced. It's significantly faster and more consistent than manual refinishing.
Since launching the prototype earlier this year, it has completed over 1,000 cycles and restored more than 200 plates. I'm now refining the design and exploring whether it makes sense to sell, rent, offer it as a service—or maybe all three. I'd love your input as I decide where to take this next.
